Mountain Bike Program - Why the East Coast has it Better

A mountain bike project is not an easy task. Planning, approvals, evaluations are all required for this project. It can also have an impact on the tourist market. This project will make mountain biking more mainstream. Before you begin, it is important that you check the permit requirements.

After residents raised the question of creating a mountain biking facility, Warburton MTB Project was established. The project was supported by a Healthy Parks, Healthy People grant from Parks Victoria, and was subject to a feasibility study from the City of Warburton.

The Rhett Walters memorial trail committee worked with the Parks and Recreation Department to develop the trail. The goal of the committee was to find a location that would allow for maximum use while minimizing the impact on the surrounding environment. The Parks and Recreation Department began to work with the committee in February 1997.

On October 30, 1999, the Rhett Walters Memorial Mountain Bike Trail opened. The trail was created to avoid the Bear Creek drainage area's wetlands. This was done to minimize any impact on the environment and allow for the use of the trail by all mountain bike riders.


The trail runs through state forest and Yarra Ranges National Park. It also passes by Warburton. To ensure safety, the trails will be spread across multiple areas.

Warburton's MTB project has been under development for more than two decades. The project was supported by more than 22 people who testified at a public hearing held December 8, 2010. The public hearing was well attended and the Parks and Recreation Commission approved a proposal for the project's development. Following the approval of the concept, the Commission held another public hearing to decide whether it would endorse or deny funding.

The Commission didn't recommend that the project be approved. The Memorial Committee asked for a planning committee to make a revised plan that would be presented to the Commission. This plan would include an assessment of the local economy and tourist market. The committee would also evaluate possible trail sites and recommend sites.

The International Mountain Bike Association maintains the MTB Project database, which contains information about mountain biking trails. The database has been created by Adventure Projects, a company that creates authentic communities for outdoor activities. The project also includes a website, virtual rides and photos. More than 39,000 trails are included in the database. This project includes interactive features as well as GPS capabilities. Riders and regional experts compile trail information. This data is generated by users and is constantly expanding.

The MTB Project has been an official source of trail data for the USGS. The data is used to produce a map that displays the elevations of the trail, the peak names, and other land designations.
