How To

How can I get started in Base Jumping

Base jumping (also called free-fall Parachuting) allows participants to jump from fixed objects (usually cliffs), including bridges, towers and buildings, with no equipment attached. To safely land, the participant jumps from the object. It's similar to skydiving but you don’t have to wear a parachute or hold your breath as you wait to open it.

A wingsuit jumper is the most popular type of base jumper. A wingsuit is two pieces of fabric joined together. The chest, arms and legs are covered by one piece and the legs by the other. The boots enable the jumper to stand upright while in flight. Jumpers pull the straps that attach to their feet tightly during descent. The material covering the legs will bunch up and create a large pocket under the body. This air pocket will grow large enough to allow the jumper to open his/her parachute, and safely land.

Base jumpers often use powered suits to get through the air quicker. Two main components of powered suits are a backpack with batteries and a pack that can be worn underneath the jumper's clothing. These small rockets can fire hot gas at high speed from the packs. This creates thrust, which propels the jumper forward. These suits are loud and heavy, however.

BASE jumping can be a dangerous sport. Learn how to BASE Jump. Be aware of the risks. There are several ways you could die doing this activity: falling off a cliff, hitting an obstacle head-on or upside down, or colliding with another jumper. Although BASE jumping isn't always dangerous, it can prove very dangerous if done incorrectly. Be sure to follow the safety tips below before you attempt to BASE Jump.

Begin by learning safe BASE jumping techniques on a smaller hill. Before jumping from a bigger hill, you should take a few moments to become familiar with the terrain. Second, watch out for weather conditions. If the wind isn’t blowing, don’t jump. Foggy skies can also be a problem. If you are unable to see 10ft ahead, it might be best to wait until the clouds clear. The third thing you should do is make sure that you have all the gear. Make sure you have a helmet, goggles, gloves, and a full suit with a harness. Fourth, make sure you have a plan. Ask someone to join you if things go wrong before you leave the ground. Don't jump alone. Always have someone with you.
