Bob Haro's Master BMX Bike in the 1980s

olympic snowboarding

Bob Haro's "Master", a revolutionary freestyle bike, revolutionized BMX. It was the iconic model of the mid 1980s. The Master frame was built around progressive geometry, and featured a bold graphic scheme. This frame was made for the future. The master has set the standard for cutting edge design whether you ride flatland or freestyle.

Haro Bikes was one of the leading brands in freestyle BMX biking bikes during the 1980s. Riders of the bikes won almost every sport title. They were the most loved bikes of that era. FREESTYLIN’ Magazine published the first advert for them in 1985. But, it was only later that the company developed a line of freestyle bicycles that would revolutionize the freestyle scene.

Haro Freestyler and Master are the first two freestyle models. Both models share the same seat mast and head tube angles. Both share a swaged triangle at the rear. But there are a few key differences between the two bikes.

The shape of the fork legs is a major difference. The fork stander used to be higher on the fork leg in the first generation. This allowed the fork and bike to fold down while still maintaining a straight ride.

Later versions of "Master" were updated. The front gussets were also machined to prevent cracking. These frames were fitted with more refined chainstays. These frames also had non-drive side dropsouts that were not brazed-on.

Torker BMX in Fullerton made the second-generation USA Haro Master. It had a striking resemblance with the original drawing of 1983 model. Many features were added to the model, including tapered seat stay, swept dropouts, and double-s-bend chain remains that fed into a standing platform at the rear dropout.

The introduction of a fully-welded gusset at its front end was another significant improvement. This not only reduced the chance of cracking but also allowed the Master to have a slight weight advantage.

The 1986 models were the most desirable of all the era's models. Although these bikes were often based on the 1986 model's specifications, they were modified for the 1987 frame. The Master was not equipped with a stacked seat mast, unlike the FST/Sport.

Three color options were available for the Haro Master. Neon Green was team issue. Gray and blue were also available. Like the FST, Sport and Haro Master were available in two sizes.

The 86 Master was a highly collectible bicycle. These bikes were given to the team riders Ron Wilkerson and Dave Nourie. Some models were only equipped with the back triangle. Other models had serial numbers from 1985.

Haro decided to reissue the frames using the era-correct manufacturing process when it came to doing so. They used locally sourced raw material in this instance.
