Backcountry snowshoeing is an exciting, adventurous way to discover untouched powder. It also protects you from the risk of avalanches. It takes a great deal of practice and skill to learn the basics.

Knowing your gear is the first step

Before you set out, make sure your gear is in working order. Learn how to put on and change your skins, for example. This process may have to be repeated several times before it becomes second nature.

Carry a map and compasses when riding in the wilderness. You can avoid harm and ensure you get home safely.

If you are not confident riding in the backcountry of a resort, take a tour that is accessible by lift. If you choose to ride in the backcountry, it is best to stay within the boundaries of a ski resort or take a lift-accessed tour.

Get informed

To get started, the best thing to do is take an avalanche safety course. Usually, the local snowboard club, or other outdoor organizations will offer this course. The cost can range from $50 to free.

The first step to safety in backcountry snowboarding is certification. AIARE Avalanche Awareness, Avalanche Rescue, and Avalanche 1 Courses will teach you the knowledge, skills, and understanding of avalanches that you need.

Start small, then progress to the more challenging terrain. It is also a great idea to practice with a partner on a controlled terrain at the same ski resort that you will use to explore the backcountry.

Discover your backcountry gear

Before you leave the resort, make sure you're comfortable using the avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe that's included in your pack. You can also find a few local snowboard clubs that offer these items for rental so you can practice in a controlled environment before going out on your own.

is it wrong to let kids do extreme sports

Bring extra gloves/layers (a liner and waterproof mittens are typically enough) to help protect your hands from the cold. A hat and sunglasses will protect your eyes against the sun.

Be aware of the surroundings. Even with the best gear, you still run the risk of being struck by another rider or falling. This is why it's so important to be aware of your surroundings and to look for people in case you need assistance.

Think outside the box - It's tempting to take every powder day face shot you can think of, but this can be hazardous in the backcountry. Choose lines and faces with low avalanche risk, especially if there is a high avalanche threat in the area.

How To

How can I get started in Base Jumping

Base jumping (also called free-fall Parachuting) allows participants to jump from fixed objects (usually cliffs), including bridges, towers and buildings, with no equipment attached. To safely land, the participant jumps from the object. This is similar to skydiving except that you don't need to use a parachute and you don't have to wait for it to open.

The most common type is a wingsuit jumping suit. A wingsuit is composed of two pieces of fabric that are sewn together. One piece covers your chest and arms while the other covers your legs. The jumper wears special boots that allow him/her to stand upright during flight. Jumpers pull the straps that attach to their feet tightly during descent. The material covering the legs will bunch up and create a large pocket under the body. When this air pocket becomes big enough, the jumper opens his/her parachute and lands safely.

Base jumpers may use powered suits to propel themselves faster through the air. The two main components to powered suits are a backpack filled with batteries and a undercloth that houses a jetpack. These packs have small rockets that can shoot hot gases at high speeds. This creates a thrust that propels the jumper forward. However, these suits can be heavy and loud.

BASE jumping can be a dangerous sport. It is important to understand the risks involved in BASE jumping before you attempt to learn. You can fall off a height, get hit head-on or upside-down, or collide and injure another jumper. Even though BASE jumping is not always dangerous, it can be very dangerous when done incorrectly. You can avoid injury by following these safety tips before trying to BASE jump.

Practice safe BASE jumping techniques starting on a small hill. Be sure to spend a few minutes getting used to the terrain before you jump from a higher one. You should also be alert for weather conditions. Try to jump when the wind isn't blowing in your face. Also, be careful of foggy skies; if you can see more than 10ft ahead of yourself, you might need to wait until the clouds clear. The third thing you should do is make sure that you have all the gear. Be sure to have the right gear. Fourth, you should have a plan. For any problems, have someone else follow you. Don't ever jump by yourself. Always have someone watching over you.
